Second half of the season begins

So here we are facing the first weekend of qualifiers of the new year.

Good luck to everyone competing this weekend and in the rush of weekends to come.

Once there are a good number of 2nd qualifier results for athletes I will update and post these results as well. I know that at this time of year it can become difficult to keep up as some will just be doing 2nd while others are already on the 3rd. I will try to keep the results coming as they are available and as the numbers permit.

Wishing everyone fun and exciting competitions!

Good luck to all…

New system, New rules

So I realized that I have not yet mentioned the new rules in place in Ontario and although the results posted on this website are the provincial levels, the invitational competitions are also about to start and this new system has changed many things.

Ontario has always seemed different from the other Canadian provinces.

Ontario had a level 1-9 then onto National system while the rest of Canada follows the Canadian Provincial Program (CPP) which is 5 levels and then National.

This year Ontario changed their system entirely and has adopted a system much like the Junior Olympic system in the USA, which also made changes to their program this year.

The difference being that Ontario has retained the 9 levels vs USA’s 10 as level 10 in the USA is like our National program which is governed by the Canadian rules.

Confused….I sure was!

So of course like any interested gymnastics fan I looked for information on this new system and found myself on the USA gymnastics website reading the new Junior Olympics program.

Ontario, to my understanding, is slightly different in that there are not compulsary music/routines however there are compulsary skills through levels 1-5 and 6 begins “optionals”.  The bulk of the changes for Ontario seems to be in levels 1-7 and levels 8 and 9 have expanded their permitted skills.

In Ontario the Provincial program starts at level 5, the first level where you may enter qualifiers, invitational ranges from 1-9.

I have heard many mixed feelings about this new change as skills not previously focused on in Ontario have been added i.e. front hip circle and stride circle on bars were not skills frequently seen in Ontario invitational competitions.

Ontario also changed its scoring system going from the previous Difficulty score + Execution Score to one single score out of 10 which includes both factors.

It would seem that athletes, judges and coaches alike have alot of new learning this year, we can call it a developmental year in Ontario Gymnastics.

Good luck to all
